The wisdom teeth are the last set of molars to come in, and they don’t always grow in right. Because these teeth haven’t fully formed yet, dentists say that people should get them taken out when they are younger. It’s not true that all young adults get wisdom teeth. In fact, some people get them much later in life. When you go to the dentist for regular checkups, he or she will keep an eye on how your third molars grow and will recommend extractions when they need to be done.
Having pain or pressure in the back of your mouth is the most common sign that you have wisdom teeth. Not everyone has problems with their third teeth. Even though they don’t hurt, wisdom teeth can still be a problem. When it’s time to have your wisdom teeth taken out, you should see your general dentist regularly for checkups. He or she will look at your teeth.
These are the most common signs of wisdom teeth:
- Pain
- Swelling or pressure
- Difficulty fully opening the mouth
- Seeing the crown of a wisdom tooth poking through the gums
- An unpleasant taste

Infections in the wisdom teeth
If you don’t treat your wisdom teeth, it could hurt your oral health. A lot of the time, wisdom teeth grow at an angle and only partly come through the gums. This is what it means for a tooth to be “impacted.” It’s hard to clean around wisdom teeth that are impacted because you can’t see the whole tooth.
You are more likely to get an infection because of this. Infections that are very bad can spread to teeth and gum tissue nearby. This can cause gum disease and tooth loss, also known as periodontal disease. All of these things can pose problems with the placement of your teeth, leading to tooth moving and an uneven bite.
Around an infected third tooth, cysts or tumours filled with fluid can form. People with these cysts may need surgery to get rid of them if they hurt. If you get your wisdom teeth taken out as soon as possible, you can completely avoid these problems.
